Seattle-area garbage workers go on strike

Some Seattle-area garbage workers have abandoned their routes in favor of picket lines, in a strike expected to affect about 1 million people in King and Snohomish counties.

City officials say they’re disappointed that the Teamsters union representing garbage workers and Waste Management Inc. weren’t able to reach agreement.

Mr. Ritter’s security background includes almost 20 years with Vance/APT, leading operations at diverse sites including public utilities, steel mills, coal and copper mines, product distribution centers and paper product manufacturers.

Mr. Ritter has also served as an Asset Protection Team (APT) instructor in the U.S. and Canada, and has held several State Department of Criminal Justice Services and Department of Public Safety trainer certificates. In addition, he has served in the United States Army with 10 years active and 11 years reserve military service. His military experience includes military police training and performance assigned to strategic nuclear weapons support aircraft as well as reactive and custodial duty at a NATO nuclear weapons storage facility.

Unionized Doormen Could Strike

Thousands of unionized doormen and other apartment workers voted last night to authorize a strike later in the month, potentially leaving New Yorkers everywhere (or just on the Upper East Side) to sign for their own packages, pick up their own laundry and find other building workers to fall in love with. Though doormen in Brooklyn and Queens approved the measure earlier this week, workers in Manhattan approved the measure last night, authorizing a strike if negotiations can’t create a new four-year contract by 12:01 a.m. on April 21. Union 32 BJ president Mike Fishman said in a press release, “Today’s strike vote shows we’re determined to keep our city a place that working families can afford to call home.” The biggest issues are wages, health benefits, sick days and overtime, according to 1010Wins.

San Francisco hotel workers hold two-day ‘siege’

The giant hotel corporations that dominate this city’s top hotels may think they can hide behind the current economic crisis to force workers to accept a contract full of takeaways. But some 9,000 hotel workers and their union, Unite Here! Local 2, are saying loud and clear: “Think again!”
